The COVID-19 Rapid Antigen test became FDA EUA (Emergency Use Authorization) in late September 2020. Before the FDA approved the Rapid Antigen test, the only way to determine if you had an active case of Coronavirus was to have a PCR test performed. The results of the PCR test took between 24-72 hours to get back. The Rapid Antigen tests detect specific proteins on the surface of the coronavirus. These tests are sometimes referred to as rapid diagnostic tests because it can take less than an hour to get the test results. Positive antigen test results are highly specific, meaning that if you test positive you are very likely to be infected. The COVID-19 Rapid Antigen test looks for people who have just started to have or are having symptoms associated with the virus and need to know if they have the virus right "now." The results are available within 15-minutes. The COVID-19 Antigen can take between 5-8 days to show up in your system after being exposed to the virus.
